Whether you’re looking for a little inspiration or seeking a visual strategy for your tiles, this post can show you what colors dominate our Instagram feeds.
The Top 15 Instagram Profiles
Although the top 50 accounts shift in position from time to time, with the Kardashian-Jenner sisters vying for top spot, the same accounts have mostly dominated the tiles. Of course they are all #aesthetic and feature big brands.
- Cristiano Ronaldo
- Ariana Grande
- Dwayne Johnson
- Selena Gomez
- Kylie Jenner
- Kim Kardashian
- Lionel Messi
- National Geographic
- Taylor Swift
- Justin Bieber
- Kendall Jenner
- Nicki Minaj
From a visual perspective, they’re all fairly consistent — creating a brand persona that instantly identifies them.
15 Color Combinations for Instagram
Based on their most recent tile rows, I’ve pulled a color combinations to inspire your own feed.
At the top of the list, the official instagram account solidly mirrors the typical instagram aesthetic. We see a lot of flatlays and millennial pink. All of the lighting is fairly soft and feels natural.
Most of the colors are soft as well, with bright tones tempered by gradients.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s account mixes the dramatic lighting of events and photoshoots with completely unfiltered lifestyle shots. This results a a huge contrast in colors.
Deep, dark browns dominate his images, as do natural blues and turf greens.
Ariana Grande’s account is an exercise in restraint. Almost all of her images have black backgrounds or have been desaturated. This leaves us with a very sepia inspired color combination.
The overall effect is “art house” meets glossy magazine cover.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s feed feels like a walk on the beach after an matinee movie. Yellows and browns dominate his images, as do a few pops of orange.
He’s got a “blockbuster” aesthetic that feels extremely summery.
5. Selena Gomez
Surprisingly, Selena Gomez’ posts are all over the place. It’s very authentic and fun.
The colors range from natural tones to peaceful blues and greens. Although she definitely has a streak of neon between the calmer hues.
6. Kylie Jenner
The cosmetics mogul, Kylie Jenner, has a feed that reminds you of a convex mirror. Most of the edges are slightly in shadow — putting focus on the center. The result is a point of view that pulls the eye toward faces and flesh tones.
Retro orange, emerald green, burgundy and a dusky blue blend between the blush tones.
Kim Kardashian’s account capitalizes on consistent use of filtering. It’s mostly a sandy, festival feel, when you can afford to glamp in the desert.
Between the browns are calm blue-greys and sweet lavenders.
8. Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi’s colors are the sportiest of the bunch with a lot of football-field greens. Blues and yellows pop up too.
Most of his shots are brightly lit or full flash. The overall effect is high energy.
The cocoa and khaki combination of Beyonce’s feed creates a new nostalgia. We’re definitely going to look back on this as peak 2020s colors.
From the denim blue to the deep browns, the images reflect a burning energy and quiet restraint.
Similar to Selena’s feed, Neymar’s images seem like authentic snaps of his life. They’re promotional events or little glimpses of everyday occurrences.
As a result, the blues of the sky and green of the football field fill up most of the tiles.
National Geographic’s dramatic lighting was much moodier than I expected. From underwater images to night shots, the high-contrast images include a lot of blacks and dark brown.
Less surprisingly, the greens and yellows of nature fill a lot of the visual space. The result? A visual balance that reminds us to look for beauty within darkness.
12. Taylor Swift
The yellow-beige of Taylor Swift’s person creates a sunny aesthetic. This is punctuated by bright, cheerful lighting in many of her images.
Alongside these cheery tones are some striking reds from her lipstick choices to clothing to typography. It feels like “New Hollywood” meets “The Girl Next Door” — which I presume is her USP.
13. Justin Bieber
“Someone gave Justin Bieber bubblegum,” says the aesthetic of his tiles. His current promos all hone in on the contrast between black and pink. At first I thought it was just the graphics but he’s even wearing a pink hat in the middle shot.
Overall, the feed looks punky and punked.
14. Kendall Jenner
Maybe Kendall Jenner is the “Golden Girl” with this glam, warm-lit feed. Every image features glowing skin and bronzed filtering.
Paired with some grey-blues, the color combination reminds me of a luxury hotel.
15. Nicki Minaj
Straight off of a Barbie Box, Nicki Minaj’s feed explodes with bright pinks and steely blues. That’s pretty much her persona — right?
Side-by-side, the subtler tones, like lavender and peach, really bring together the girly (neo-kinder-whore) feel. It’s high energy, a little bit sour, and heavy on the sweetness.
