I’ll admit it.

My career grew from an excuse to listen to stories. I love talking to people about their journey. I live to research trends and uncover something fresh. I devour data to uncover business opportunities. I dig into human behavior to find that sweet spot.

Marketing, freelance writing, and creative content all start with listening to people’s stories. Then, I find a way to turn that into a universal truth that will move the masses.

Over the years, I’ve challenged myself by working for clients, agencies and publications. During my day jobs, I’ve finished degrees, updated certifications, and picked up skills from anyone willing to share. As a result I have built both a diverse knowledge and a specialized skill set.

Feature Article Series for Shop Forest First

In this series of articles, I interviewed several store owners in the Forest, Virginia area. All of them were women who had channeled their intelligence, skills and passion into local businesses. The series included an introduction with statistics about female-owned businesses in the United states and how they are contributing to the overall economy in meaningful ways. I enjoyed listening to each subject and relaying their entrepreneurial journey on the page.

Copy Editing for American Association of Airport Executives

When the American Association of Airport Executives approached me to review some of their internal safety documents, I was excited. The project allowed me to use my proofing skills to ensure consistency throughout several documents (and hundreds of pages) written by several authors. I kept the documents organized, reading all of them through once to determine the preferences of each author and correct any grammatical errors. Then, I worked with them to create a consistent formatting between authors.

Brand Guide for The Listening, Inc

As a volunteer for The Listening, Inc, I worked with founder Nick George to write the first version of their brand guide. It includes an overview of the organization, a visual guide for the brand, key messaging and blogging guidelines. By creating this internal document, other volunteers and contributors can quickly understand the essense of the non-profit’s brand and stay consistent with the other existing materials.

It’s time this industry dropped the buzzwords and focused on the things that really make a difference. Anyone can make promises, use the latest technology, or generate big ideas from a brainstorm. Few deliver on contracts, apply tested principles, and break lofty concepts into a list of concrete projects.

That’s what I do.
